But I am SO proud of you for your patience and how you continue to invite your friends to join us for online services.
Our attendance has more than doubled, with over 100,000 people joining for Saddleback worship during COVID-19.
I haven’t heard the latest numbers but I know that over 6,500 people have given their lives to Christ in the past 14 weeks of online services!!!
Now, on the one hand, it is so good to see some of the COVID-19 restrictions being relaxed —
that’s hopeful!
On the other hand, because of fewer restrictions, 14 states reported the highest number of new infections INCLUDING CALIFORNIA, THIS PAST WEEK.
That’s not good!
So PLEASE wear a mask as much as you can.
It’s the loving thing to do.
Love your neighbor as yourself.
THE SECOND CRISIS WE’RE NOW FACING
On Friday, Kay and I were asked by Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes and by Pastor Ralph Williamson of Christ Our Redeemer AME church in Irvine to join them with a dozen other pastors, churches, and law enforcement leaders, to walk together in a peaceful unity walk last Saturday morning.
About a dozen Black, White, Asian, and Hispanic Churches came together as one, and it was an incredibly inspiring and moving time of fellowship with fellow Christians.
It was NOT led by any political movement.
It was churches getting together.
We worshipped together, prayed together, sang together, listened to pastors, Sheriff Barnes, Chief of Police Mike Hamel of Irvine, and other speakers shared moving words, and we walked together for a couple miles in unity.
It was holy moment of reconciliation and love — so different from the hatred we’ve witnessed on video after video.
It was also a moment to say that, together, we in the Body of Christ oppose all injustice everywhere, as Christ commands us.
“Peacemakers who sow seeds of peace will reap a harvest of justice.” James 3:16
As we enter the fourth week of global protests against injustice, this is the most sustained emphasis on injustice since the 1960s.
There are 3 things that are uniquely different about the current protests:
First is the DIVERSITY of the protests.
Maybe 30 million or more White, Asian, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, and other Americans are now joining our Black brothers and sisters in the protests against injustice.
I’ve never seen that in my lifetime.
A second difference is that these protests are GLOBAL, not just in America.
Injustice against Black people is being protested in Korea, Spain, Australia, Hong Kong, and literally all around the world.
Third, these protests are SUSTAINING. [
In the past, protests have lasted a day or two.
This is very different.
Like COVID-19, this sustained outcry shows little sign of slowing.
Why? First, with iPhone videos and social media, brutality cannot be hidden anymore.
Anyone with a heart has been horrified and sickened by the videos.
The protests will likely continue if lethal force continues to be used in non-lethal situations.
Second, with people out of work due to COVID-19, and so many attractions and distractions shut down, people are paying attention like never before.
Third, a new generation refuses to be complicit in silence.
It’s not enough to claim “I’m not a racist.”
You must speak up against it if you aren’t one! Silence is complicity.
What has perpetuated bigotry and prejudice for hundreds of years has been the silence of all the non-racists who said nothing and allowed racism to be acceptable without shame.
Things can change (for good or bad) in a single generation if ENOUGH people speak up and say “This is not right!”
Remember when smoking in public, in restaurants, planes, and elsewhere was acceptable?
In one generation it vanished!
What happened?
Enough non-smokers stopped complying in silence and said “We really don’t want this!”
Smoking in public died from public shame.
The same could happen with injustice.
It will take GOOD people, LOVING people, Christlike people, to stop being silent, to stop pointing to other problems, and to simply say “We don’t want to live in a world with either injustice or racism.
It’s not OK.”
“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

I want to help you gain a larger and more biblical perspective on what is happening around us.
It’s my job as your pastor.
So I intend to write a longer explanation and interpretation of what is happening in the world this week.
But first, some of my kids and grand kids are moving to Idaho tomorrow!
So I’m helping them!
So let me just share this word of HOPE:
Anyone who knows anything about church history can easily see God’s hand in 2020.
He intends to bring good out of the bad.
If you know how God has worked in the past, you recognize that this moment could be … might be … can be … a precursor to another Great Spiritual Awakening in our nation and world!
You know that our nation deeply needs healing.
We’ve all been praying for it.
But it all depends on how we as His Church responds to what is happening.
We can respond with fear … or impatience … or anxiety … or disgust … or anger … or apathy, and say nothing.
OR we can be Christlike and respond in love, in faith, and in sacrificial service.
I already know how YOU will respond.
In every disaster, crisis, war, or uncertainty in the past 40 years, Saddleback people have courageously stepped up to grow beyond their fears to a new level of spiritual maturity.
As I said at the start, I am so very proud of you.
I have no doubt, that once again, you and our Saddleback family will shine brightest in the darkest days.
I could not love you more.
This next weekend is Father’s Day and our 45th Wedding Anniversary!
Thank you Kay for 45 incredible years!
P.S. Here is a picture of Pastor Ralph Williamson and OC Sheriff Don Barnes who both invited me to speak and walk with them in the Unity march.
YES, WE ALL WORE MASKS!
We only took our masks off for the photo so don’t scold me!
