Muslims practice fasting for one month each year. It`s the ritual of Ramadan, the holiest month of the year for followers of Islam. Ramadan is the time when Muslims show their dedication to their God, Allah. They practice self-control and think about people who are less fortunate.
Muslims believe that during the month of Ramadan, Allah revealed the first verses of the Koran, the holy book of Islam. At many mosques during Ramadan, about one thirtieth Tarawih. In this way, by the end of the month the Koran will have been recited completely.
During Ramadan, Muslims do not eat or drink anything while the sun shines. Fasting is one of the five duties of Islam. As with other Islamic duties, all able Muslims take part in fasting from about age 12. All restaurants are closed during the day for Ramadan. Families get up early for suhoor, a meal eaten before the sun rises. After the sun sets, the fast is broken with a meal known as iftar. Iftar starts wih dried fruit and sweet drinks that provide a quick energe supply.
In cases where people briefly forget about the fast and eat something, they can fast for one more day at the end of Ramadan. They can also choose to help feed poor people. Also, not everyone has to fast. Old or sick people, children, pregnant women, and people who are traveling don`t have to.
Fasting serves many purposes. While they are hungry and thirsty, Muslims are reminded of the suffering of the poor. Fasting is also an opportunity to practice self-control and to cleanse the body and mind. They say they feel the peace that comes from spiritual devotion.
At the end of Ramadan there is a big feast, Eid Al-Fitr. It is one of the most important Islamic celebrations. People dress in their finest clothes, and adorn their homes with lights and decorations. They give gifts to children and enjoy visits with family and friends
