Saddleback Church January 13, 2021
Saddleback Lake Forest eNews Dear David,
I'd just met Steve and Kim,
and as dinner progressed,
Kim shared
that she was a marriage and family therapist.
"This is sweet,"
I thought,
"time with a counselor and no meter running!
What questions should I ask?"
And then it hit me -
what's the number one reason couples wind up
in your office needing help?
"They start keeping score."
She didn't even have to pause or think about it.
And she went on to explain
that it's not just a problem for couples,
but a common cause of the breakdown of relationships of any kind.
That wouldn't have come
as a surprise to Paul.
He described
the kind of relational love that Jesus modeled for us
as being "patient," "kind," and "keeping no record of wrongs."
In other words,
it refuses to keep score and oozes grace
in a way that honors and lifts up.
(1 Corinthians 13:4-5)
But the pull is always toward scorekeeping,
even in the healthiest of relationships.
The Bible makes it clear
that we're made for community,
and yet it devotes considerable space
to coaching us on how to go about participating
in it in life-giving ways,
clearly signaling that it doesn't come easily.
Healthy relationships take time, energy, intentionality and...practice.
They're messy,
but oh so worth the transformational effort.
As we settle into 2022 together
we look forward to helping you find your place
to belong at Saddleback Lake Forest
and strengthen your relationships in the New Year!
