From canceled camps to closed pools, typical summer plans for families across the country are shifting. For families like mine, the newness of “being out of school” has worn off. My kids have been home since March! It can feel sad or disappointing to enter a season that’s usually marked by special events knowing that our summer plans have changed. But while our go-to summer fun might be put on hold, that doesn’t mean we can’t still look forward to new family adventures! So, how can we make summer special in this new normal? When I asked my three sons (between the ages of 4 and 9) to create a checklist of summer fun, I was surprised! They didn’t ask for grand vacations — they wanted to tackle a science experiment, explore nature, and try a new recipe. It’s good to remember that to children, sometimes the little things aren’t so little. Trying a new food, reading a new book, or learning a full song by heart are big, important, and fun milestones! Sometimes it just takes a little creativity to foster curiosity, bust up the boredom, and see things in a new light.
The greatest part of summer has always been the opportunity to freely play and learn as a family. And while things have changed, that definitely still exists. Here are a few kid-approved ideas to get summer 2020 started! Print this summer checklist. Keep track of the new activities and adventures you’d like to do this summer with this printable PBS KIDS bucket list. (We’ve even included room for you to add your own must-try ideas for summer fun!) Build a newspaper fort. Go camping without leaving your living room. With just two items (newspaper and tape), this simple tutorial will help your family write a new adventure this summer.

Summer travel may look different this year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a change of scenery. Here are some new ways to soak up the sun, spend time in nature, and relieve stress in kids and grown-ups! Create a new instrument. Bring a new melody to your summer! Create different pitch, tones, and sounds by creating your own glass bottle water xylophone. Be a thoughtful neighbor. Foster generosity with a random act of kindness. Write or draw cards for your local pediatric hospital, plant a tree, or dedicate allowance for a charity. Get creative in ways to be physically distant and socially present in your community!
Pool closed? No problem — turn a pool noodle into an imaginary horse! Our step-by-step guide helps you turn summer break into summer fun with a one-of-a-kind pool noodle horse. Giddy up!
